Online discussion explores current challenges and ways afterschool programs from Pennsylvania and across the country are using virtual youth programs and innovative engagement strategies.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (Monday, March 30, 2020) — Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) announced today that it will participate in an online discussion exploring how afterschool humanities programming for youth ages 12 to 18 is being impacted by the COVID-19/novel coronavirus outbreak.
The virtual event, organized by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council Teen Reading Lounge network will take place April 2, 2020 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and explore local and national examples of virtual youth programs and youth engagement strategies. It is open to any Pennsylvania afterschool provider, library, school or community organization.
The closure of libraries, K-12 schools and many community centers serving youth has resulted in an abrupt disruption in the afterschool opportunities young people have come to rely on for connection, comfort and learning.
During this 90-minute discussion, guest speakers will examine best practices for staying connected, guidelines for virtual and other forms of communications with youth, and creative solutions for reaching youth and families that may not have robust technical resources.
Guest speakers will include Laura Saccente, director of Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN); Dr. Valerie Adams-Bass, assistant professor of education at the University of Virginia; and Corri Hines, school age services advisor, Bureau of Library Development, Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Pennsylvania Department of Education
This opportunity is provided in partnership with the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
No advance registration is required. Join “Youth Engagement in the Time of Social Distancing: An Introductory Conversation” on April 2 at 10 a.m. online.
PSAYDN is an initiative of Center for Schools and Communities, a division of Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit.
