Harrisburg, Pa. — Center for Schools and Communities today announced a new program that will train Pennsylvania teachers how to engage English learners in democratic discussions through the authoring of social justice-oriented essential questions.
“The Power of Perspectives: Using Primary Sources to Design Dynamic Substantive Democratic Discussions to Facilitate English Learner’s Academic Language Development in Social Studies” is a collaborative 18-month statewide professional development initiative to develop capacity among teams of teachers to design and deliver rigorous grade-level content instruction and assessment that is accessible to English learners at all proficiency levels.

This summer, Governor Tom Wolf signed Act 44 of 2018 into law, creating a School Safety and Security Committee within Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The Committee is tasked with developing the criteria school entities are to use in performing school safety and security assessments, issuing a survey to school entities to measure school safety and security preparedness, and administering grants.

The work features Dr. Myrna Shure’s I Can Problem Solve and Raising a Thinking Child programs. These Social Emotional Learning educator and parent programs teach children, ages 4-12, problem-solving skills. Stephanie Colvin-Roy, lead ICPS national trainer and training and organizational development associate at Center for Schools and Communities assisted in the film’s creation. Within the film, Colvin-Roy shares information about the ICPS program’s international appeal, conducts interviews and provides footage of Santiago, Chile. Additionally, Colvin-Roy was instrumental in shaping the concept and content for the film and assisting with the production schedule and interviews in Sturgeon Bay, WI.
View ICPS filmThe January training was part of ongoing consultation, technical assistance and collaboration with the Foundation in Chile as they adapt the I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) program in Spanish to serve preschool classrooms in Santiago, Chile. The request marked a milestone for the CSC and CSIU as the first in-person training ever delivered abroad. The opportunity was memorable the CSC staff members — Migrant Education Program parental involvement and special projects coordinator and the Safe Schools special projects managing coordinator — who were on site in Chile January 8-11, 2018. La Fundación San Carlos de Maipo has as array of direct services related to youth intervention programs, child development and early childhood, mental health, family unification, family engagement and out of school youth related programs. Training evaluations ratings were exceptional and the foundation’s executive board members are looking forward to future collaborations with the CSC and CSIU.
