With so many programs in place to ensure student success in the classroom, are students still being left without the tools they need to succeed? Unfortunately, the answer is sometimes yes, as many students are unequipped and left behind. One of the main factors for this problem is poverty, which is unavoidable for many, and was the focus of Millersville’s Conference on Education and Poverty held last weekend.

These so-called “soft skills” translate into social and emotional learning (SEL) in the world of academia. The Center for the Promotion of Social and Emotional Learning (CPSEL) at Center for Schools and Communities was recently launched to promote these character development skills, bridging the gap between research and practice, for educators and practitioners in formal and informal settings.

Bullying Prevention Month
The Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE Afterschool program has been changing students’ lives for the past 12 years. It has inspired students through hands-on programs, built stronger support systems in their educations and formed strong interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For 13-year-old triplets Amanda, Antonio and Alexis Colecio of Weatherly, the SHINE program has opened up a world where anything is possible.
